October Morn

Most All of my friends are disconcerted by my enduring love for geezer bands like Chicago and artists like Barry Manilow and Barbra Streisand. So when I want to belt Neil Diamond’s “September Morn”, which I often do in the fall, I find myself driving around Charlottesville in the early morning (even my wonderful roommate Ben has his limits).

Synesthetically, the autumn morning sky sometimes matches the chord progressions, and the quest for those colors inspired a recent photo outing with my friend Mark Meier. We drove north on Barracks Road where the houses are far from the road and there are plenty of fences.

We watched as the Blue Ridge fog cleared a bit; the sky turned pastel,

and the clouds began to look a little like Dr. Seuss amoebae.

We found two objects of interest: thing #1 was this weathervane that sits atop a structure ill-befitting its charm, so it took a while to find an angle that focused the weathervane,

and I almost missed thing #2, the spider hanging between nearby trees, until Mark pointed it out.

This is kthread.com, so a closer view of the spider seems appropriate.

We turned from the weathervane and spider; Mark decided to shoot slightly near the street.

Crossing the street, I was drawn to the sweet-smelling hay bales—yet another synesthetic layer reminding me that, after three years here, Charlottesville mornings still can make me feel that way.
