It's not hybridity; it's promiscuity, the good kind:) I've always found something lonely about Clarissa's deciding to buy the flowers herself. Lonely because she's alone, in so many ways, and because she can choose only what the shop offers. But you "picked" your apples---let's call it apple agency---and took along a beautiful companion.
