sunshine, bread pudding bliss, and b.side’s
Tuesday morning began in Miami, where I rose at 4 to catch a 6 o’clock to Dallas, then a 9 o’clock to Denver with plenty of time for the RoadFood warrior within to eat cheese enchiladas at Jack-n-Grill where they have “hot daze and chile nights.”
Refusing to choose between, I startled my server (who called me “Sunshine”) by asking for both red and green chile on my enchilada stack.
Chile craving conquered, I drove to Boulder, (read the rest after the jump)
walking Pearl Street to find two dresses in Goldmine Vintage,
on my way to The Cup, a great local coffeehouse (kthread highly recommends).
I followed a man of freedom back down Pearl Street,
past pirates,
and musicians
into plum sorbetto goodness at Gelato Bacio (which means “kiss” in Italian),
and later meeting up with Boulder cool kids at b.side Lounge (wait for the sign).
I’m lucky to be working with Susan Mernit on a new Knight Foundation project (details very soon), and she pulled together some of the cool tech stars (some of them are, actually, TechStars) for drinks (in the video: Susan Mernit, Andrew Hyde, Samantha Murphy, Micah Baldwin, Lisa Williams (link goes to my favorite post of hers), Amy Gahran, and Ingrid Alongi). I hope my travels take me through Boulder again soon—
and I drove back into the Denver sunset to board a flight to San Francisco.
To find, when I checked in at the hotel in Union Square, that my final destination was actually the Ritz-Carlton resort at Half Moon Bay. As always, my life is amazing.
Here’s what the room was like (admittedly, I am a little out of it, as I’ve been up for 22 hours at this point):
I looked out the taxi window the following morning–Half Moon Bay is stunning (in the large version, you can see the water sparkle):
Walking again into the Union Square hotel lobby, I found my good friend Jeannine, and, after securing a car, we headed over to Tartine to begin blissplotting our day over bread pudding,
flaky croissants,
a croque monsieur,
and an admirably grill-marked soppresseta sandwich.
We decided—well, I’ll let Jeannine tell you:
And riding the bread pudding buzz into wine country, we stopped into Cakebread Cellars, where you take a tour of the grounds (they’re okay with you dancing between the vines) before the tasting,
through the new barrel room,
and out through the gardens.
Stopping briefly at Domaine Chandon, we went on to the wonderfully unpretentious Cline winery, where they directed us across the street to taste olive oil first (also wonderful) and then welcomed us back.
We were amused and perplexed by this sign outside,
but not surprised to know the Cline winery was recommended by Jeannine’s friend who works in the wine business.
Later, Jeannine and Leslie let me lead them to dinner down an alley (to escape Union Square slickness):
Since we had just met, Leslie asked as I pulled out my Flip cam if there was a food blog she should know about. Yes, I believe there is.
And I have four whole days left in this city of fog, alleys, and surprises…

Oh, how I love Boulder! I’m envious enough to marvel at all this fabulousness, all the while realizing that I adore sleep far too much to ever have the stamina necessary to make it happen.

so very jealous. that ritz in half moon bay is one of the most fabulous places i’ve ever been. had to suffer through an oil conference there once, but the view was worth it.
