kthread cooks: fried green tomatoes

TOWANDA! Empowering women and significant food is a good theme to begin the week.

When I commented to my friend Scott that he should fry the green tomatoes on his porch, he responded that he didn’t have a trusted recipe. Voilà:

(Truly, you need to see this episode in HD for the first part–)

It’s a forgiving, restorative recipe: slice thinly, salt and drain for five minutes, dredge in cornmeal/flour, fry in butter (or bacon grease or lard) for 2ish minutes, turn with a fork, cook 2ish minutes more. Suggestion: make these for women you adore.

drink pairing: the rest of the clabber, then moonshine

salt recommendation: Kosher

How do you make fried green tomatoes? And what do you serve alongside?

Lovely, K. In my humble opinion, fried green tomatoes should always be served with field peas, greens, and a tall glass of (sweetened!) iced tea.

I like to dip them in blue cheese dressing. Field peas and greens (preferably collards) are a nice southern touch. Main course? Pork ribs or chops. Yummm.

  3. KristenNo Gravatar:

Oh, field peas, D, good call.

Sophmom, I’m with you on the collards. I’ve never had blue cheese dressing; that’s a great idea for next time…

Awesome, thanks for posting this! My relative who made these best was notoriously stingy with her recipes, so I’m really excited to give these a try! Best, S

Happy to, S. Let me know how it goes; ah, the beauty of green tomatoes…

Kosher salt, you say. You’re becoming more Jewish by the day. Next thing I know you’ll be making a pilgrimage to the Holy Land (aka Israel, aka Jewy central.)

  7. KristenNo Gravatar:

Oh, Antony. I do adore Jewish food, though; look for many, many latkes here later in the year…

  8. HusbandNo Gravatar:

You fed me my first fried green tomato.

Also, blue cheese is good on everything.

  9. KristenNo Gravatar:

Agree, darling, if the dressing is made with a good blue cheese. And here’s to many more fried green tomatoes; I’m so glad you remember…
