slow food miami dinner at creek 28

I made lunch slowly today, roasting small red potatoes slicked with oil, then placing fried local eggs on top. The beautiful orange yolks spilled onto the potatoes, making a dressing of sorts, and I thought about last night’s unhurried dinner event at Creek 28.

Slow Food Miami, described online as the “home of the international Slow Food movement in South Florida, where principles and pleasure dine together,” held a dinner featuring local ingredients with guests from Slow Food New York and Slow Food Italy chapters.

The fabulous leader of Slow Food Miami, Donna J. Reno, directed me firmly toward a table in the back when I arrived, so that I could sit next to the lovely Sophia Brittan of Kitchen Caravan, who is in town for the month. Later, Donna explained the evening’s wines:

Chef Kira Volz also talked about her local sourcing and her kitchen garden at Creek 28 (one of only two restaurants in Miami with kitchen gardens, we learned), and the unexpected rain led us from the terrace inside the hotel, where the tables were reassembled.

All part of the fun, I scanned the room of individuals brought together by love of thoughtful food (at my table: Todd, Theo, Sophia, Jean Marc, Daniel):

and there was goat cheese wrapped in crisp phyllo with honeyed blueberries (an odd first course, but a wonderful dish),

mahi mahi with potatoes and cipollini onions (I wanted a bit more kick in the green sauce),

and an icy citrus ending with strawberries.

Better still, there were promises between those of us at the table to meet again soon—finding a group to cook with here has taken a long time, but I have every hope that it will have been worth the wait…
