education, a wine merchant, and good people

Wednesday I flew to Los Angeles, a city that always gives me fresh energy, for an event with Knight Pulse and GOOD magazine tapping local community leaders. I’ll point to video from the event later, as well as the picture of me surrounded by people there who bring people together to solve problems through design, urban homesteading, opening up content, improving neighborhoods, and publicizing volunteer opportunities.

On the way to the event, I stopped by Palate, where there is a wine bar in the back and a very beautiful menu (truly, I wanted to order everything) with local produce to complement a great list of single glasses.

It’s nice to be between rows and rows of bottles, and the Lambrusco partnered with potted pork

before Dolcetta d’Alba (one of my favorite regions) and a cheese plate with the Azeitao, that is made with cardoon thistle, and Roquefort Papillon (some of you will understand why I ordered this cheese).

Still glowing from the event, I had dinner with Max and Kyla at Lala’s, deciding that this rice dish with chorizo and feta is one of my favorites (risotto equivalents are always attractive propositions). These are GOOD people. And good people.

It was hard to sleep for the few hours before my flight to Austin, still excited by the turnout of interested people working to make Los Angeles a better place in big and small ways.

Next time, I’ll be here longer, hoping to meet more of the Annenberg Foundation staff (who turned out in force to support) as did my friend John Jackson, who leaves wonderful comments here and is really the person to go with to wine bars in the back of restaurants and anywhere else, as he knows so very much about wine
