in the pink of perfection

It started yesterday morning at the Pinecrest farmers’ market with watermelon radishes and their pink hearts.

The Redland Organics table always surprises me, and I learned that loofah sponges begin as luffa gourds (can be eaten as a vegetable when young), and I may plant some of the seeds still inside my cucurbit to grow more gourds as I polish the imperfections of the old year.

Everbearing mulberries, fractal cauliflower, pigeon peas, and more radishes lined the other Redland Organic tables that I looked up from to hear the welcome news that this market has been extended until April.

At another table, I liked the veiny bottom of this pink Lady’s Slipper Orchid as a metaphor for the year ahead—the blossom must cycle, or the flower will not regenerate.

Yesterday was my birthday, and my friend Jess and I ate a beautiful Pink Lady cake that she made for the occasion in the sun outside the Magic Cottage. She explains the strawberry deliciousness:

Baked goods have a tendency to resemble their makers. It is a very beautiful cake.

And then we were off to brunch at the Ice Box,

and in the name of research, we had to test a few of their famous cakes:

Dizzy with sugar, we wandered the outdoor market on Lincoln Road in South Beach until a shimmering pink gown caught Jess’s eye—she immediately connected to the vintage Parisian prom dress:

and as soon as she slipped it on, a man appeared to offer her a ticket to the theatre:

Thank you again, Jess, for the cake and a perfectly lovely day; it was filled with wishes and hopes for the year ahead from (thank you) so many people I care about and will hold close as we all wander toward shimmering things blowing in the wind—

Ooh, that pink lady cake has me thinking of the strawberry cake I’ve been craving of late. I think I mentioned it to you two weekends ago. Sounds as if your birthday was amazing.

Ben, I think there will have to be some baking in a certain Nashville kitchen (I’ll pack utensils) in a few weeks. It was exactly as I hoped my birthday would be, and thanks for your message; look forward to continuing the celebration soon—
