my friend, the bear and the magical real

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

From Nashville, I returned to Miami, unpacked the Jem costume, and drove back to the airport to board a San Francisco flight for the Mobile for Social Change barcamp and to see my good friend David.
David’s blog is El Oso (The Bear), and he is on a temporary hiatus from his nomatic global lifestyle [...]

an outrageously fun halloween weekend

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

Jem is my favorite cartoon character for at least three reasons: she has pink hair, transforms into a rock star with the help of her computer named Synergy, and she’s truly outrageous (truly, truly, truly outrageous).

My office seemed to think so too, and I arrived in costume at the airport (a strange place on [...]

kthread reviews: proof

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

I’ve posted the below review on the Goodreads site; of all the spooky literature I crave in October, this play might be my favorite.
Proof: A Play by David Auburn

My review on Goodreads

rating: 4 of 5 stars
“Proof” is ideal for the witching hours of the night, when you cannot sleep, idly [...]

kthread goes to maker faire

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

I’ve just spent the weekend with hackers at Maker Faire in Austin, Texas.

Sitting next to the cool kids from the Austinist, who offered maps to let people draw their area landmarks,

I met inventors, idealists, and geeks and told them about the Knight News Challenge.

Wandering, I watched as the Austin Metal Authority forged [...]

the hardest working cupcake in austin

Friday, October 17th, 2008

Each time I visit, I fall harder for Austin, Texas–the pride in local, surfeit of vintage, and funktacular food entice me into scheming ways to make migas my regular breakfast.
Yesterday, the delightful Rosental Alves, who directs the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas, invited me to talk to his journalism class preceding one [...]

serious typography

Saturday, October 11th, 2008

My favorite tweet (read: Twitter update) of recent weeks was Lane Becker’s Thursday: “Can you imagine? A federal government that took typography seriously?”
It so happens that Thursday morning I was walking through a Miami airport terminal after my identification and boarding pass were checked five times, and I paused at prints on the walls from [...]

the coat poem I didn’t write

Sunday, October 5th, 2008

The poetry world is rather upset this week about the “pirated poetry anthology” Issue 1, published as a .pdf (3,785 pages) by Stephen McLaughlin and Jim Carpenter.
A Kristen Taylor is included, and her poem on page 104 is titled “Coats made without courage”.
I find the project amusing and imagine the editors rounded out the [...]

black belt sushi, political tofu, and a (non-lame) duck tomato

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

I think chestnuts look tribal in their protective cupule.
Walking the Chicago Green City Market on Saturday, I saw chestnuts,

striped turkish eggplants,

and the elusive famed yellow beets.

Passing up crêpes (skillyfully made below),

I opted for plummy bread pudding and butternut squash pie (both good Thanksgiving dessert ideas).

The fractal cauliflower seemed to [...]

colour my world, chicago

Saturday, September 27th, 2008

It begins with the pink panther theme from across a Chicago intersection.

I went up the L platform to meet my friend Brian, a groovy cat himself, and off we went to Pilsen, a Chicago area with notable Mexican food, in a city of very notable Mexican food.

Passing the rainbow building, we went to [...]

so we built a garage

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

I thought some of you might be interested in a talk I gave today on behalf of Knight Foundation.
This morning, my colleague Robertson Adams recorded my presentation of the News Challenge Garage (the incubator site I helped build for the Knight News Challenge contest to fund innovative digital news delivery ideas) at the Communications [...]
