I always crave seafood on summer weekends, and this afternoon I sautéed a soft-shell crab in lard to top roasted red potatoes with pesto.

(Flour the crab, tap off excess, fry in two tablespoons of fat on high heat for two minutes a side.)

Tempted to make pesto from whatever green winks at me in the kitchen, sprouted sunflower greens (about a cup) with a few walnuts, an eighth of a cup of parmesan, one clove of garlic, and two tablespoons olive oil became a mild paste stirred into warm potatoes.

And the bits left in the pan sizzled with the browning butter that I poured over the crab, sprinkled with Sel Gris, and picked up, letting the juice run down my arm and onto the potatoes that are best eaten without a fork in the sunshine…

is a curious thing / makes me laugh / makes me sing…more than a feeling—that’s the power of lunch.

Like that perfect karaoke song that includes an air guitar riff, simple lyrics that can be spoken/shouted instead of sung, and an ending the audience will clap for (“The Power of Love” by Huey Lewis and the News), a really excellent lunch anchors a day, creates a caesura by fastening food to a pause.

This afternoon I made pasta with stone crab from a Joe’s Stone Crab outing with the FOWA Miami crew (great event), and local tomatoes from Redland Organics along with garlic chives still warm from the sun on their market stand I visited before heading to the Magic Cottage.

Redland Organics also slipped a sprig of rosemary into the boxes of small red potatoes, a thoughtful reminder that farmers want you to cook the food after or even in lieu of admiring it.

I’ll quarter these and roast them after tossing them with oil and scattering the rosemary needles on top—and that will go beneath local eggs from my CSA egg share (I’ve named my hen Gloria) for lunch tomorrow…

If I were cooking lunch for you at the Magic Cottage, what would you ask me to make?

Soon after checking in on Sunday, I convinced my colleague Paula to go from the Hudson Hotel to Hudson Street for brunch at the Fatty Crab, where the menu builds on pork belly.

I would return for the “belly & egg”—pork belly and a fried egg on a brioche triangle (and for another cocktail that the bar creates for me, with a quail egg shooter).

We wandered through Murray’s cheese shop (I’m still tweaking the Thanksgiving menu), and explored the holiday craft vendors in Union Square to find these amazing little shirts for disruptive children:

Meeting up with my friend Eric, he pondered aloud professorship and status in a dark bar,

and then Paula and I marveled at the deviled eggs (read: pork toasts of awesome) and burgers at Resto before three acts of Complexions Dance at the Joyce Theater and the hotel’s Library Bar.

And I danced around my room before sleeping for a few hours in this city that doesn’t, dreaming about yesterday’s meetings with game designers, scintillating conversation with Mr. Shirky, and lardo pizza (all the dreams came true)…
